Let’s talk about how amazing Downton Abbey is. I saw it in my suggestions on Netflix quite a bit but I ignored it because I was busy watching Gilmore Girls and other pointless melodramas. I think part of my hesitation is period pieces are always so weird to me; I enjoy the costumes much more than the dialogue and drama. Someone suggested I watch it but they have horrible taste in television so I, again, ignored the suggestion. Saturday I decided I had nothing to lose and started watching season one - I didn’t move (except to microwave something) for the entire first season. I woke up the next day and re-watched the first episode to look more carefully for the costumes and the subtle humor.
I think the most amazing part of this series is how much it involves each of the characters. The sisters are incredible, the way they live such distinct lives in such a repressive time for women. Sybil is my favorite and reminds me of what I would probably have been like in that time period (if I were hugely rich). The way the show also mixes in the incredibly detailed backgrounds and the lives of the servants is in my opinion unseen in other series. More than the amazing characters, which itself is a reason to watch the show, are the costumes and the incredible setting they work within. I want to dress just like the sisters at the garden party, I want hats and elaborate yet delicate gowns to wear to dinner with my cousin.
I started watching season two last night and hopefully I can contain myself from watching all of it in a binge again.
