I met a woman in a campground bathroom when I was really young, seven at the oldest, who was signing to her sister and her children/her sister’s children. Only her sister was deaf but everyone communicated primarily through sign language with the occasion spoken words. I thought it was strange that such small children, children who could barely walk could communication so effectively through sign language. The mother told me that children learn to sign and speak through sign language long before they learn to talk. This has greatly influenced how I’ve viewed those who communicate differently since.

A friend posted this on Facebook as if it’s some amazing feat that a mother and daughter can speak to each other even though they’re both deaf. It is cute, because the girl is cute and got some cool things from her friends and family but her being deaf has nothing to do with that.
